Social Needs Assessment (SNA)

Project Title: Co-development and feasibility testing of a social needs assessment in an outpatient oncology setting

Not everyone experiences the same access to cancer care. Systems and structures – like income inequality, unsafe or unstable housing, transportation gaps, or other barriers created by the way services are organized — can make it harder for people to get to appointments or receive timely care. These barriers can lead to worse health. 

Research shows that when care teams ask about people’s support needs in a respectful and culturally safe way, it can help connect individuals and families with resources and improve their overall care experience. We want to create and test a Social Needs Assessment (SNA) tool for outpatient cancer care at CancerCare Manitoba. 

The overarching aim of this 2-year study is to advance equitable access to cancer care and develop a foundation for future social needs interventions through the co-development and pilot testing of a social needs assessment tool.
